Begin with a small, complete project
For this sample exercise, use a photograph you own or have permission to edit. Prepare a simple announcement image with a photo, a short headline and an event detail. Use fictional details while practising so your test file cannot be confused with a real announcement.
Write down the intended destination before editing. A website image and a printed poster have different delivery requirements. Ask for the required dimensions and format instead of choosing them at the end.
Six skills to practise
- Find your way around the workspace. Open a file, zoom in to inspect detail and return to a view that shows the whole composition.
- Organise layers. Keep the photo and text on separate, clearly named layers so another person can understand the document.
- Make and refine a selection. Select a useful part of the image and inspect its edges against the intended background.
- Use a layer mask. Hide or reveal part of a layer while retaining the underlying image information.
- Adjust colour and tone. Make a controlled change and compare it with the original, checking whether the result suits the brief.
- Save and export deliberately. Keep an editable working file and create a separate output for its intended destination.
Build a file you can revise
Adobe describes layer masks and adjustment layers as ways to work without permanently changing the original image data. That matters when a colleague asks for a different crop, a subtler adjustment or another background. As a practice check, reopen your working file and make one requested revision. If you cannot identify the correct layer or undo a visual choice without starting again, return to the organisation and masking steps.
Review the finished image and the working file
- Can a colleague read the headline and event detail at the intended viewing size?
- Are selected edges clean enough for the background and final size?
- Can you explain which layer controls each major part of the design?
- Does the exported file have the requested dimensions and open correctly?
- Have you kept the original photograph and an editable copy of the project?
These are practice checks, not a certification assessment. Repeating a small project with a different photo often reveals which steps you understand and which still need help.
